AEO case study · Nuelink
How I Got Nuelink Cited and Recommended by AI Search Engines
⚠️ Note: I only recently started running this strategy. It's an active, ongoing campaign not finished yet. So the wins shown here are early results. All data was last captured on October 30, 2026.
Context
What Is Nuelink?
Nuelink is a social media automation SaaS for creators, brands, agencies, and businesses. It helps users plan, schedule, automate, analyze, and repurpose content across multiple social networks.
Objective
The Real Goal
The goal was to get Nuelink recommended by name when someone asked Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or another AI engine which social media tool they should use.
The priority query was “best social media automation tools in 2026.” It combined strong commercial intent with direct product relevance. It was also the most difficult query in the campaign.
I treated traditional SEO rankings as an important input, but not the final outcome. A page can rank well and still be absent from an AI-generated answer.
The constraints
Why This Was Difficult
Bigger brands already owned the category
Queries around the best social media tools were dominated by companies such as Buffer, Hootsuite, Zapier, and other websites with more backlinks, more traffic, and years of search history.
I was building it as a one-person operation
There was no dedicated AEO team, no content team producing the listicles for me, and no budget for buying backlink placements. I handled the research, writing, prioritization, publishing decisions, technical SEO, link building, monitoring, and outreach.
The main website framework reduced visibility
Nuelink’s existing website framework made some listilces harder for search engines and AI systems to process reliably. Similar competitor content could appear in AI answers while our pages were skipped.
Instead of waiting for a full technical migration, I used Nuelink’s help center to publish the articles. It gave the campaign a cleaner path to crawlability, indexing, and early rankings while the larger technical problem was being addressed.
AI systems were becoming more skeptical of self-promotion
Early in the campaign, I saw signs that simply publishing a listicle and placing Nuelink first would not always be enough. Google could cite the article but avoid recommending the publisher’s own product by name.
The approach
The Strategy
I built the campaign in layers…
First, create a write and publish useful listicles targeting all Nuelink’s features, supported social media platforms, and ICPs.
Second, prove that the pages could rank.
Third, support the most important pages with backlinks and external discussion.
Fourth, use our own rankings as leverage to earn mentions on other sites (most of them were competitors)
Outreach becomes much stronger when you can offer a placement on a page that already ranks for the same query, which is why I left it as the fourth step in this strategy.
01
1. Map the question space by feature, platform, and audience
I did not build one oversized listicle and hope it answered everything. I mapped how people naturally describe the problem at different levels of specificity.
The first layer focused on capabilities:
- Best social media automation tools
- Best social media bulk scheduling tools
- Best social media crossposting tools
The second layer focused on the social networks Nuelink supports:
- Pinterest, TikTok, Mastodon, Bluesky, Telegram, Google Business, LinkedIn, Facebook, Threads, YouTube, and Instagram scheduling tools
The third layer focused on the buyer and ICP:
- Agencies and ecommerce brands
- Real estate teams and small businesses
- Influencers and creators
02
2. Publish where the content could be read
I published the first waves inside the Nuelink help center because the main blog framework was creating technical friction. The help center pages indexed quickly and began ranking while the larger technical work continued so we can fix the issue and be back to
I requested manual indexing for priority pages and added keyword tracking immediately after publication inside SE Ranking.
03
3. Build useful listicles
The listicles had to work as fair comparisons. Nuelink was always included because that was the goal, but the other tools still needed accurate descriptions, clear use cases, and honest tradeoffs so we avoid being spammy in Google’s eyes.
I matched each page to its query. A page about bulk scheduling focused on scale and workflow. A page about Pinterest scheduling focused on Pinterest-specific needs. The pages shared a repeatable structure without becoming duplicate versions of the same article.
Here are a few listicles I published:
- Best Social Media Automation Tools 2026
- The Best Social Media Bulk Scheduling Tools in 2026
- Best Social Media Crossposting Tools 2026
- Best Pinterest Scheduling Tools in 2026
- Best TikTok Scheduling Tools in 2026
- Best Mastodon Scheduling Tools 2026
- Best Bluesky Scheduling Tools 2026
- The Best Telegram Scheduling Tools in 2026
- Best Google Business Scheduling Tools in 2026
- Best LinkedIn Scheduling Tools in 2026
These are only a few examples. I published more listicles than the ten shown here as part of the wider campaign.
04
4. Slow down the publishing pace
Once several similar listicles were ready, I deliberately slowed publication. Releasing many near-identical listicles in a short time could create poor quality signals.
05
5. Put the link-building effort behind the hardest query
The main “Best Social Media Automation Tools” page was the most competitive and commercially important page in the cluster. So I decided to give it the strongest link-building push.
I built 18 links to the page using varied anchor text, including close variations of “social media automation tools” and “social media automation tool.”
The placements were earned through collaboration, not purchased.
The page progressed from position 55 to position 12, then to positions 10 and 11, and finally to position 9.
The backlinks did more than move the page into the top 10. They also helped turn the Best Social Media Automation Tools article into a source for Google’s AI Overview, connecting the link-building work directly to the AEO result.
06
6. Follow the sources AI engines were already using
For each target query, I checked more than the organic results. I recorded pages cited in Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude across several phrasings of the question.
Each engine returned a different source mix. That made manual review more useful than relying on one authority metric or one software export.
I separated the targets into practical groups:
- Editorial listicles that could be approached for an inclusion or collaboration.
- Reddit and Quora discussions that answer engines were already citing.
- Review platforms such as G2 and Capterra that required profile work rather than normal outreach.
- Dead or abandoned pages that were unlikely to be updated.
For outreach targets, AI citation was the highest-weighted signal. Ranking position, real traffic, authenticity, and freshness also mattered.
07
7. Support first-party pages with independent discussion
Reddit became an important supporting layer because Google was frequently using community threads in AI-generated answers.
I identified discussions that matched the exact queries we were targeting, including crossposting, bulk scheduling, platform schedulers, automation, and general social media management.
The team contributed relevant comments where appropriate. The purpose was to participate in conversations that AI systems were already reading and increase the number of independent contexts in which Nuelink could be evaluated.
This layer mattered most after it became clear that a first-party listicle could rank and still fail to produce a named recommendation.
08
8. Turn our own ranking into outreach leverage
Once our main automation listicle began ranking, I started a focused outreach campaign to publishers covering the same topic. I offered mutual, relevant placements and prepared the copy, images, anchor text, and URLs in advance to make each collaboration easy to complete.

Inbound proof
The signal I did not expect
ContentStudio found us through the Facebook scheduling roundup

Circleboom reached out after finding our Google Business scheduling guide. They asked to be added in second place and offered Nuelink a matching placement in one of their own articles, along with promotion to their audience.
Takeaways
What I Learned
Ranking and citation are connected, but they are not the same
A first-page ranking creates discoverability and authority, but it does not guarantee a named recommendation. The most reliable approach was to combine ranking your own listicles with mentions on listicles AI engines are already using to get answers.
Owned listicles create unusual leverage
Ranking our own listicles made the outreach to include Nuelink in other listicles super easy because we had leverage.
A placement inside a ranked Nuelink listicle had value. That made mutual collaborations easier to explain and reduced negotiation.
AEO is a distribution problem as much as a content problem
Writing a strong listicle was only one part of the work. The brand also needed to appear across editorial listicles, community conversations, review platforms, and other surfaces used by answer engines.
That is why outreach, link building, Reddit research, technical crawlability, and content architecture all belonged in the same campaign.
Citation sources can change quickly
A page sitting outside the first page can suddenly appear in an AI answer. A highly authoritative domain can disappear. A Reddit thread can become a major source after an update.
I kept lower-priority targets in the outreach pool because today’s weak source can become tomorrow’s citation source.
